HealthGrades releases list of 50 and 100 top hospitals in the U.S.

HealthGrades has released its annual list of the top 50 and 100 hospitals in the United States, according to a press release.

The press release states that the analysis examined 150 million Medicare patient records from fiscal years 1998 through 2010 for 26 medical procedures and conditions including total knee replacement, heart attack, and stroke.  Hospitals were rated on how well the patients fared during their hospital stay in terms of mortality rates and preventable complications.

The top hospitals, listed here, had a 30% lower risk adjusted mortality rate across 17 procedures than hospitals that did not make the list.
